About
Code: Grow Neighborhood is the evolution of Parkman Coders, a program dedicated to teaching K-12 students in Detroit’s Oakman Boulevard neighborhood on the city's far west side. The program focuses on physical computing and coding skills using Microsoft’s MakeCode Micro:bit lessons. It was founded by librarian Qumisha Goss, who grew up in the neighborhood and taught herself Python to lead coding classes at the local library.

Over the years, Code: Grow has expanded significantly. During the summer, students developed and maintained a tech-integrated urban garden, combining coding with real-world applications. This project not only enhanced their programming skills but also provided fresh vegetables to the community, freely available for residents to pick.
Many of the original Code: Grow students are now applying to college, crediting the program with inspiring them to pursue coding and technology in higher education.
